Brief description
Wara Bilong Life was a fun, interactive, classroom activity where students learn about global water and sanitation issues through a creative process.
Vision, Objectives and Goals
The aims of Wara Bilong Life were the sharing of ideas and information between students throughout New Zealand to encourage 'out of the square' creative problem solving in a 'real world' context. Students investigated the situation of their peers in Papua New Guinea schools (communicating with personnel there working on an Oxfam project) and using this information they designed and made a prototype of a method of washing hands that requires very little water. Sanitation education materials accompanied the prototype.
How does ICT contribute to the organisational objectives
The overview of the project and resource material were available on the internet while email communication and collaboration enabled classes to communicate with each other and with people in Papua New Guinea. Experts were able to follow the project on the web and give their feedback and input.
Transferability
This project could well be transferred as a handwashing initiative in schools anywhere in the world including New Zealand.
